Young
Professionals Against Cancer welcome to our website... |
Young Professionals Against Cancer (YPAC) is an organization committed to a cause all too many of us are familiar with - Cancer. Our membership consists of nearly 300 young professionals from many of Orange County's Fortune 500 companies and small, private, local businesses. Our primary objective is to support the non profit organization Orange County Foundation for Oncology Children and Families (OCFOCF). OCFOCF's membership consists of families facing the daily and frightening challenges of childhood cancer. YPAC fundraising efforts provide dollars to fund recreational and social support activities for these families, while our volunteers dedicate their time to ensure the OCFOCF members can enjoy themselves at these events.
WORKING WITH OCFOCF
"The World's Greatest Camp" is a three day Family Camp provided for
pediatric cancer patients and their families, two times a year - in June and September.
During an actual camp weekend, a minimum of eight YPAC member volunteers attend with the
responsibility of watching the toddlers (ages 1 to 5 years) at various times throughout
the long weekend. This allows the parents some much deserved and appreciated free time
with the chance to socialize and provide support to one another, while knowing their
youngest are safe in the care of YPAC young adults. The older children are grouped by age
into cabins with OCFOCF volunteer counselors.
YPAC sponsored the 3nd Annual "Ranch Day" for the OCFOCF families which
entails a full day of recreation, barbecuing, and crafts at a local Orange County park.
Over fifty YPAC volunteers work months in advance securing the many necessary details such
as food donations, site, games, prizes, and coordinating the staffing needs for the actual
day. The success of the event again this year, measured solely by the pleasure of the
families and children, has secured the need for Ranch Day every year.
YPAC also hosts a "Night at the Angel Game" outing. Over 50 YPAC
members attended the evening game with 100+ OCFOCF members as our guests. A tailgate party
before with dinner and ice cream allowed all the participants a chance to socialize,
followed by a fun time spent together cheering for our local team.
YPAC also volunteers assistance to two important local support groups for families with
children suffering from Cancer - CHOC and POPSIG (an arm of Kaiser Permanente). On a
monthly basis, a minimum of five YPAC members will attend each of these two organization's
functions to care for the children too sick to leave the hospital for the weekend and to
allow time for the parents to spend sharing their experiences to support each other
through this difficult time. Many of the OCFOCF families utilize these support groups and
organizations.
And once a year, we assist with the annual OCFOCF Holiday party, sponsoring the "Ice
Cream Sundae" Bar and volunteering many hours to generate toy and gift donations
to be handed out to the children from Santa. Over 25 YPAC members attend this event to
ensure a memorable evening for all the OCFOCF families attending.
FUNDRAISING EFFORTS
Our funding comes from many sources. Membership dues, corporate sponsors, "Toast
on the Coast" and our mixers. Toast on the Coast is a black-tie evening
of dancing and music and a silent auction held in the Fall each year and is coordinated,
staffed, and silent auction items are solicited solely by our volunteer members on the
Events and Outreach sub-committees. YPAC also holds monthly mixers at various restaurants
in the Orange County area to increase our membership and awareness level in the community,
and to provide added financial support and encourage volunteerism for OCFOCF amongst our
members and guests.
As an organization, YPAC is solely reliant on our member volunteers to both generate the
needed dollars to support the OCFOCF events as well as provide the necessary people
required at each event to make them successful. We are proud to offer our time and efforts
to help small children with cancer and their families enjoy special moments each year.
