Why a Girls' Summit?

v It is important for us to tell others what's important to us and why.

v When others have to guess about our issues, they sometimes come up with the wrong solutions.

v We have voices and the right to be heard.

v We have the responsibility to let others know what's working and what isn't.

v The more we talk about our issues, the better we'll become at speaking out and the more we'll be heard.

v The more we are heard, the better the solutions. The better the solutions, the better we feel.

Be one of the special teens who will let their voice be heard. Join 60 girls from Hull Middle School at the Sister-to-Sister Summit on March 3, 2001. Girls of all races, ethnicities, national origins, religions, and abilities will come to talk about what is really on their minds.

Space is limited. Sign up now. Fill out the attached application and questionnaire and turn it in to Ms. Masek by January 26, 2001. Or, register online at www.geocities.com/sistersummit by January 26, 2001.

More on Why ...

It’s not just teachers and textbooks determining girls’ achievement. A significant part of the equation is what happens in the hallways, between classes, and even outside of school. The AAUW Report: How Schools Shortchange Girls (1992) termed these issues the “evaded curriculum”—issues not usually covered in the classroom, but inextricably linked to education.

Through this summit, girls will have a chance to speak out and be heard on the issues that affect their daily lives. AAUW’s 1991 Shortchanging Girls, Shortchanging America poll shows that in adolescence, girls experience a dramatic drop in self-esteem and lose the confident, strong voices they once had. Sister-to-Sister Summits are designed to strengthen girls’ voices while identifying action steps to promote better opportunities for all students.

The American Association of University Women promotes equity for all women and girls, lifelong education, and positive societal change.
